Chapter 10

The following morning, I headed into town for a spot of coffee at Magic Beans. Usually Liam dropped me off, but this morning he had to go to Portland for a meeting, so he’d left the house earlier than usual. He worked for his family’s investment company and did most of his work online. Occasionally though, he needed to attend meetings in Portland and Boston.

I parked my little red hatchback in the business lot and walked over to Magic Beans. A few daisies fell on my head, which I brushed off, along with kicking a few out of the way as I walked on the sidewalk. The town had already taken quick action with their increased budget and had modified another snowplow with a sweeper, which was currently sweeping the daisies out of the downtown streets.

Pausing just outside the door to Magic Beans, I glanced out over the town green. I couldn’t help but laugh. Daisies carpeted the landscape, climbing like vines and falling from the sky. I immediately sobered, recalling the news reports last night. There was more speculation on one of the national news programs about the mystery of Charm Cove’s daisies.

Pushing through the door into Magic Beans, the scent of coffee and fresh-baked goods assailed me. I was in luck. There was only one person in line, although all the tables were full. Zoe waved from the corner. She had texted to let me know she was saving us a table.

After getting a coffee and a fresh blueberry scone, I hurried over to the corner where she was waiting. “Good morning,” I said as I slipped into the chair across from her.

Zoe tucked one of her brown curls behind her ear and smiled. “Morning. How many daisy showers did you see on the way in this morning?”

“Just two. Is it just me, or are they slowing down a little bit?” Sipping my coffee, I waited while she finished chewing a bite of her bagel.

“I think you’re right,” she said after she wiped her mouth. “I only saw one. They’re still growing like crazy, but I guess that’s a better option than having them fall from the sky.”

“So I’m going with Emma to visit her Aunt Olivia today,” I offered.

Zoe arched a brow. “Really. What’s your excuse?”

“We have no good excuse, we’re just going.”

Zoe laughed. “Any plans to transport yourself in anywhere?”

I lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “Maybe. If needed. But I’m not planning on it. Any news from Daniel?”

Zoe grinned again. “Nope, and he’s thrilled. There’s nothing criminal about daisies growing like crazy and falling from the sky. For once, he’s not walking that crazy tight rope between the witch world and the non-witch world.”

I laughed. “Any other news? Rumors, general gossip?”

Zoe’s cheeks flushed. “Well, I’m finally pregnant. That’s why I’m drinking tea,” she said, holding up her mug.

“Oh wow! Congratulations!” I stood and rounded the table to give her a quick hug before sitting back down. “Do I get to plan your baby shower?” I asked with a grin.
